The relationship between Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) and ex-husband Joel (Michael Zegen) has never been smooth sailing. On the one hand, his decision to give her up helped launch her wildly successful comedy career. However, in this penultimate episode, it is hinted that the conflict between Midge and Joel will somehow be resolved in the upcoming finale of the series.
While it seems likely that mending their relationship is possible, Midge’s ex, Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby), is a wild card. Overall, the Season 5 sequel shows that Midge and Joel are not only still friends, but maybe the only people they trust. Midge continued to visit him in prison even though she was extremely popular with several other famous ex-husbands. She also visits to update him on the kids and make sure Joel remains a favorite in prison. Midge’s future doesn’t seem to have any immediate love interests, let alone a manager she can trust now that Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) has moved on after their fight .
However, fans were disappointed that the show didn’t end Midge’s relationship with Lenny. He has only been seen once in Season 5 so far when Midge ran into him at the airport in Episode 1, “Go Forward”. Ex-lovers clash as Lenny prepares to leave for California, and it’s awkward because Lenny sees Midge for the last time, judging her during a performance at Carnegie Hall. This resulted in Midge having to walk home in the middle of the ensuing blizzard, causing hypothermia. It is hoped that they will see each other again, but the jury is out that they reconnect as lovers.
