Sumeet Saigal, an Indian-origin contestant on MasterChef Australia recently went viral after impressing the judges of the cult reality show by making them taste the pani puri she made in one of the episodes.

Saigal made the favorite Indian street food from scratch, prepared the dough for the puris, deep-fried them, made potato stuffing and even hot-hot water.

British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, one of the judges on the cooking competition, paid tribute to Saigal’s roots in Bengaluru after tasting her pani puri.
“You’re from Bangalore? And that dish was plentiful,” said Oliver. Incidentally, Oliver’s new restaurant in Bengaluru opened last month.

Saigal, mother of twins and sales manager, said the biggest challenge in making the snack was getting the puri right.
“The biggest risk with pani puri is that the puri puffs up. The dough is temperamental. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The challenge is just getting each puri to puff up.
Her memory of pani puri dates back to her school days in Bengaluru, when she would miss the bus and call her mother to take her to a popular pani puri restaurant.
“Girls giggling and laughing go to Gangotri at Hi-Point – for those who know Bangalore and know Sophias,” Saigal, 46, wrote on Instagram.
In the second episode of MasterChef Australia 2024, Saigal made three different versions of butter chicken which received mixed reviews from the judges. Earlier she made a cashew cream in a curry sauce.
While Oliver is a guest judge on MasterChef Australia 2024, the four main judges in season 16 are Andy Allen, Sofia Levin, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Poh Ling Yeow.
