X employee who slept on floor in viral pic gets top Meta job a year after being laid off by Elon Musk

A former X employee who was part of Elon Musk’s layoff and whose picture of him sleeping on the floor at the company’s headquarters went viral has joined Meta. She took on the role of Messenger’s director of product.

Esther Crawford shared updates about his work on her social media accounts. “I’ve joined the Messenger team at Meta as Director of Product,” Crawford wrote in an Instagram post.

Interestingly, she was Xa’s Director of Product Management for over two years before being fired in February 2023.

She added, “I’m thrilled to get to work with an amazing team focused on 0-1 initiatives within the app!”

Crawford revealed the reason behind her decision to join Meta. She explained, “While I considered many great options, Meta was my top choice because I’m obsessed with the way people connect through technology — and no other company has more influence in that space than Meta, which connects nearly 4 billion people (half of humanity).”

She also cited two reasons she found “compelling” about Meta. One was the “exceptional quality of people” working in the company, and the other was “the vision and intensity of Mark Zuckerberg”. She added that Zuckerberg has made the company “more efficient” and “less bureaucratic” and that it wants to “move fast and deliver great products.”

“It’s definitely a special time to be here because the company is uniquely positioned to create the next generation of social experiences while democratizing free access to AI within the app family and through what developers are building on Llama 3 (the latest open-source LLM),” he further added. Crawford’s post about her job blew up on social media, with many “congratulating” her on her new role. “They caught a winner! They are extremely lucky to have such a talented individual. Good luck on your new path!” said the individual.

Another added: “Congratulations! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!”

“I’m looking forward to seeing and learning more about what’s coming from Messenger,” said a third.

A few even shared some Messenger-related suggestions, with one saying, “At what point can our Messenger connect directly to WhatsApp so we know we’ve received a message. Maybe the only messaging app I don’t see all the time.”
