Woman who wheeled uncle’s corpse into Brazil bank to sign for loan opens up: ‘I’m not a monster’

Brazilian police have arrested a woman who went to a bank with her uncle’s body in a wheelchair to ‘sign’ for a loan. Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes, who spent 16 days in jail before being released on bail last week, has now spoken for the first time about what happened.

“The days away from my family were terrible, very difficult. I didn’t know my uncle was dead. It’s absurd what people say. I’m not the person people talk about; I am not that monster,” Metro quoted Nunes as saying to the Brazilian TV program Fantastico.

Nunes said she only realized her uncle was dead when an emergency worker confirmed it after she was called for help. She went on to say that she clearly had no recollection of the incident, adding: “I don’t know if it was the effect of the pills that I drank that day and I took from time to time. While I was in treatment I was taking the sleeping pill Zolpidem and I took more than I should have.”

Her son Lucas Nunes backed up her claims saying she has a disorder.

She claimed that her uncle ‘wanted’ the loan and that she ‘didn’t need the money’. “We always lived without my uncle having any income. My family always helped him. He only did occasional jobs here and there, but he had no fixed income,” UNILAD quoted Nunes as saying.

Nunes added that her uncle was “independent” and “did what he wanted.” She continued: “He wasn’t a wheelchair user and I wasn’t his carer like people said. I was never his carer.”

Ana de Souza, her lawyer, believes Nunes “will not be convicted at all.” “The case has just started, and there is already a sentence before the decision on the sentence. In other words, she was already punished before she was even convicted, if she will be convicted at all,” UNILAD quoted.
