Officers responded to the horrific stabbing, which happened at around 11.50am, following reports of a knife in Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware.

Onlookers watched in shock as the attack was brutally carried out in broad daylight on a busy street.

Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis of the Met said the arrests were the result of quick work by detectives and local police officers.

He said: “The investigation is at an early stage and we are continuing to work to establish why this incident happened, including whether the person responsible was known to the woman who died.

“I would urge people to refrain from speculating about the circumstances while this work is ongoing.

“One family has been left devastated by this shocking attack and my thoughts are with them at this unimaginably difficult time.”

An eyewitness told Metro about the attack earlier, saying: “A man attacked a woman at a bus stop. She was stabbed several times.

“The woman fell and the man ran away, chased by two people filming. The woman died after maybe 20 minutes.”

Another witness said the stabbing happened during what appeared to be a robbery.

London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance rushed to help the woman, who has not yet been identified.
