Having twins is a big adjustment for any family, and one couple wasn’t sure how their Hungarian Vizsla would handle the new arrivals—they certainly didn’t expect him to take on the new protective role he has.
When Sinead and Andy Finn from Gold Coast, Australia welcomed twins in April 2023, they were worried about how their dog, Alfie, would react. said Sinead Finn Newsweek that she was afraid it would “come as a big shock to him,” but when Harper and Declan arrived, it “marked the beginning of a sweet relationship” between the trio.
“Since that heartwarming introduction, Alfie’s relationship with the twins has been nothing short of amazing. He has shown a level of tenderness and protectiveness that melts our hearts,” continued Finn.
“Many times we would look for Alfie only to find him sleeping peacefully next to their cots. Alfie tuned in to their needs in an amazing way. Whenever the twins cried, he would howl softly. He would even tap us with his paw as if urgently reminds us that we care for them. It’s as if he has taken on the role of their guardian, ensuring their safety and happiness.”

Any reservations the new parents had about Alfie being jealous of the newborns are quickly dispelled, and instead he sees himself as their “faithful protector”. Vižla takes his role as an older brother very seriously, and Finn added that it is his mission to be near them at all times.
With their playful energy and desire to please, vizhlas are considered excellent family dogs that communicate well with children. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that they form an enviably strong bond with their owners, so they love nothing more than to be in the family circle.
The AKC also suggests that this breed can adapt well to change and be protective, while being extremely affectionate with their owners.
While at home, Alfie usually sits near the twins while they sleep, and will sometimes help their owners when it’s time to feed the babies. But his protective nature doesn’t stop when he leaves the house, and Finn added that he walks by the stroller the whole time they’re out and rarely lets other dogs near.
On October 2, Finn shared a “best big brother” video on her TikTok account (@sinead.finn_). The video melted millions of hearts online, generating more than 1.9 million views and more than 180,000 likes.
Finn said Newsweek: “It was as if he adopted the twins as his own, and his unwavering devotion to them filled our home with love and warmth. Alfie’s bond with our twins is a testament to the incredible bonds that can be formed between pets and children, and is a wonderful reminder that our family grew in the most cordial way possible.
“Despite my initial concerns about his high energy, he has an amazing ability to shift into a gentle and protective mode when he’s around them.
“The response on social media has been incredible. The comments section is a sea of positivity and kindness, a true rarity in today’s online world. It empowers the power of touching moments that bring people together and spread joy.”
After sharing the beautiful bond between Alfie and the twins, Finn hopes to show people how important it is to include family pets whenever a big change happens.
“Although the arrival of a baby is an amazing and joyful occasion, it is crucial to continue to give your pets love and attention,” she said. “They’re part of your family too, and maintaining their well-being and happiness helps create a harmonious, loving environment for everyone. So, cherish the moments your fur baby gets to bond with your little ones.”
The viral TikTok video has already generated over 1,500 comments, with many people praising Alfie for being so gentle.
One comment reads: “We don’t deserve them, but I swear they teach us to be better.”
Another person wrote: “His face is always in protective mode. And that’s priceless. Thoroughbred good boy right there.”
