A recently spotted but not yet released poster for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suggests that the wall crawler will face three enemies, including the Green Goblin. The poster image was snapped by Twitter user Jesser Piedra (and reposted by Comingsoon.net), and the timing seems to coincide with a new trailer that Sony has confirmed will be released on December 5th.

In the image above, you can clearly see Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, along with two others. The image on the left appears to be a heavily robot-influenced Rhino, but this has not been confirmed. If it is him, that opens up another line of questioning/speculation.

Spencer Smythe’s character was teased to be in the film as an Oscorp employee, via a fake Tumblr account for The Daily Bugle. In the comics, Spencer Smythe was the creator of the “Spider Slayers”, robotic constructs created (originally on J. Jonah Jameson’s dime) to capture and unmask Spider-Man. Smythe’s efforts eventually led to his death, prompting his son Alistair to take up his mantle and create more Spider-Slayers.

Rhino_02A Tumblr account containing a “news post” discussing the attack on Oscorp in the first film lists Smythe as head of the engineering department. He is said to be responsible for “a flight belt for the military and significant advances in robotics.” This seems to explain where the Green Goblin’s glider comes from, but may also hint that Smythe is responsible for Rhino’s new robotic appearance. Rhino will be played by Paul Giamatti, and images of Giamatti wearing CGI-designed gear suggest that Rhino’s look will be effects-heavy. Mind you, this is all conjecture, but it fits with what we know about Rhino (assuming it’s Rhino), and it fits with Smythe’s tease at Oscorp – assuming the pic isn’t just a spider slayer, but that seems like a Giamatti dump .

The real eye-opener in the poster is the figure on the glider that looks like the Green Goblin. There could be more to the story than that, and it may be a precursor to the Goblin, who will be introduced in a later film. Spider-Man has faced several “goblin” foes, including the Hobgoblin and more recently the Gray Goblin. Even if it’s a Green Goblin, it’s not clear which one.

There have been multiple people who have worn the mantle of the Green Goblin in the comics, but the two that stand out are Norman Osborn and his son Harry. Both characters are in the film, played by Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan. In both the comics and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film trilogy, Norman Osborn was the true villain, while Harry generally followed later due to a misplaced sense of loyalty influenced by various reasons, including insanity.

evilNorman Osborn’s character was only teased in the first film, and despite some ominous foreshadowing, he may not be the Green Goblin. Maybe Norman is just misunderstood and really is loving and caring. Probably not, but you can’t take anything for granted at this point.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 May 2, 2014 The trailer, however, debuts this week.

Update: We’ve replaced the image at the top with a better, higher resolution image directly from the film’s official site that allows for a clearer look at the villains. Most notable is the sight of the Goblin (or a goblin-like character), who bears more than a passing resemblance to Dane DeHaan. Check out the closer image on the right and sound off in the comments with theories!
