“Only 8730 asylum applications were registered in April” in the countries of the EU as well as Norway and Switzerland, which corresponds to the “lowest level since at least 2008, with a massive drop of 87% compared to the level pre-Covid-19 in January and February,” has detailed the agency in a report released on Thursday.

This number, however, is almost ten times higher than that of the crossed illegal borders of europe over the same period : 900, according to data from Frontex, the Agency for the protection of the european borders. This “disparity” reflects the need of protection of asylum-seekers, despite the “temporary suspension” of the recording of such requests in “several countries”.

A rise in asylum applications to anticipate medium-term

In detail, the drastic fall in applications is mainly due to the fact that the nationals of the countries of Latin America, Venezuela and Colombia in the lead, have not been able to access the european territory in April. The folders venezuelans went from 5013 in January to just 80 in April, while 64 applications from Colombians were filed, compared to 5272 in January.

The level of the asylum application, however, should “increase slowly in the coming months, when the national measures and restriction of movement will soften,” explains the agency in its report, which derives the consequences of the health crisis on the asylum application to come.

This trend has already been felt in the first information for the month of may, when applications for asylum “back already, although slowly”. “There is nothing to indicate that the application for international protection decreases” anticipates, therefore, the EASO. The european countries, explains the agency, “should be prepared for a rise in asylum applications in the medium term, including those related to the impact of the Covid-19 on the poor countries”.
