Indian metallurgist Prafulla Kumar Jena, who headed the National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (formerly known as the Regional Research Centre) of the Scientific and Industrial Research Council, Bhubaneshwar, from December 27, 1931 to March 7, 2023.

He previously held the TATA Distinguished Chair in Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. In 1977, she received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour.

He began his career as a senior scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in the Trombay metallurgical department, but later transferred there to become a professor of metallurgical engineering.

Jena has developed techniques for extracting carbon particles from slurries, iron values from tailings, and beneficiation of low-grade iron and manganese ores. His research focuses on ore and mineral upgrading, as well as the recovery of valuable resources from industrial waste.

He is said to have developed processes for the metallothermal reduction of niobium, tantalum, vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum. He also contributed in the fields of chloride metallurgy of non-ferrous ores and the extraction of nickel, cobalt, copper, lead, zinc, vanadium and manganese.

His study helped create new waste management techniques, as well as procedures to recover value from mining and industrial waste. He held 55 patents and authored 240 research articles during his tenure.
