‘Panda dog’: China zoo paints chow chow dogs to look like pandas, fools thousands of visitors

A zoo in China has come under fire after it was revealed that they had painted chow chow dogs to look like pandas. The zoo, located in Jiangsu province, exhibited the “panda dog” on May 1-5 Labor Day. While thousands of people came to see the supposed pandas, a few thought their behavior was strange as they shook their heads like dogs. However, many people believe they are real pandas, according to reports.

The visitor clips appear to have shown puppies with black limbs, ears and eye rings, but their canine characteristics were still clearly visible. Angry visitors claimed they were tricked into thinking they were going to see real pandas, leading to waves of complaints against Taizhou Zoo over the colored pets. They also questioned whether painting the puppies would be considered animal abuse as some paints may contain dangerous substances, The Sun reported.

According to VN Express, the zoo put up a sign for people to visit “panda dogs,” instead of real dogs. (Also Read: World’s First and Only All White Panda Caught in China’s Wolong Nature Reserve)

A Strait Times report said a sign at the zoo read: “Panda dogs are not an actual breed of dog. Rather, they are pet dogs that have been groomed to look like pandas or born with panda-like coat patterns. They will often have canines white undercoat with black markings around the edges of the eyes and ears, mimicking the facial features of a giant panda.”

A zoo employee told the media that they have yet to get real giant pandas because the area is too small for them.

As The Sun writes, chow chows are among the most recognizable and oldest breeds originating from China, where they enjoy great popularity. In Chinese history and culture, chow chows are revered and often depicted in literary works.
