A good Samaritan found a litter of four abandoned cocker spaniel puppies rotting in an alley in Redhill, Surrey, ilovemydogsomuch wrote. The litter has mottled skin, scaly eyes and severe infections. They were received by staff at the Millbrook Animal Center in Chobham.
After several months of intensive treatment, the puppies recovered well. Their names are Mike, El, Lucas and Dustin. Soon after, there was a full happy ending for Mike, El and Lucas when they were adopted by wonderful families. But poor Dustin is still waiting for his precious moment in the sun.
Unlike his gentler brothers, Dustin was not made for a quiet, sheltered home life. He has the soul of an adventurer, and his dominant nature is simply too much for those with the potential to accept. He loves puzzles and games, but no one is willing to satisfy his constant need for stimulation.
After raising ailing Dustin into a handsome boy, the staff are disappointed to discover that his adoptive parents don’t want him. When the adventurous dog got bored at the shelter, the staff hid his tennis balls in unknown places to keep him at bay. This exercise proved to be a turning point for Dustin.
When officers saw Dustin’s sniffing and searching skills, they contacted local police to recommend Dustin as a potential hire. Within days, everything went smoothly and Dustin was accepted as a new member of the Surrey and Sussex Dog Unit.
Dustin works with police officer Steph Barrett, on behalf of the police to find drugs, money and guns. Dustin has come a long way in the first 20 months of his life. He stays on the streets, must overcome rejection and find his true calling. We are so proud of him and wish him all the best!
