John Boy Caddell in the 2nd season of the barbecue showdown
Barbecue helped John Boy Caddell overcome his alcohol addiction. So he knew he had to share his story with the world and allow everyone to taste his delicious recipes when he got the chance to participate in Season 2 of The American Barbecue Showdown.
However, he had to keep his participation a secret for over a year as the show was postponed almost 2 years after it was announced. Following “the best backyard smokers and competitive grillers in the country as they compete for the title of America’s BBQ Champion,” the second installment of the series graced Netflix again on May 26, 2023.
Like the inaugural season, the second season followed the contestants as they faced a challenge that tested their grilling skills in ways “they could never have imagined. From unique meats to old school techniques, one day they’ll have to prove they’ve got smoking skills.”
John Boy was joined in the competition by his co-stars Thyron Mathews, Cindy Hayter, Delilah Winder, Michelle Lundstrom, Joey Victorian, Eduardo Gonzalez and Logan Sandoval.
But while John Boy came to the limelight via The American Barbecue Showdown, it wasn’t the first time he appeared on a TV show. Before that, he was one of the first contestants on the new Discovery+ show Moonshiners: Smoke Ring in which Moonshiners’ Steven Ray Tickle sought out the best pitmasters in the South.
Career of John Boy Caddell
John Boy Caddell has been cooking since he was five — he learned from his mom, grandmother and great-grandmother, who were excellent cooks.
Unfortunately, he lost his way and fell into alcoholism.
After 20 years of struggle, John Boy then decided it was time to “get his life right” and began looking to do “something with his time, something that would benefit the community”. He then got in touch with his cousin Earn, who instilled in him a passion for barbecue, and started JohnBoy’s BBQ, a barbecue joint along Highway 62 in Morgan County, also employing those in recovery.
“I wanted to put my time to good use and part of your recovery is through service work and I believe we are doing a great service to our community by putting people to work and teaching,” said John Boy.
Initially, they were only open on the last Saturday of the month, but have since expanded due to popularity.
So what did he do the other days? “I go out to the prison on Friday nights and we talk to the inmates there and I attend AA meetings,” he said. “We have a few people coming in and helping out.”
One of his employees, Kevin Anderson’s daughter, who is a recovering addict, said, “It’s really nice to have a place where she can come and be safe. Everyone here is a good influence and the people who take advantage are not normal people she would hang out with.”

The John Boy Caddell Family
John Boy Caddell comes from a family of four.
His father, John Caddell, is a former electrician/technician who worked at the Y-12 National Security Complex. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, John turned 67 in September 2022. “I am only a beggar, but the blood of Jesus Christ has made me rich in this life and beyond,” said John.
As for his mother, Tressie Caddell was a High School graduate who worked at Red Cap. She turned 67 in July 2022. Proud of her son’s success, Tressie shared on her FB: “I am beyond proud of my son John. Celebrating one year of sobriety! You are a great role model to many and you have the biggest heart of anyone I know. I love you son! Mom is always there for you”
John’s parents, John and Tressie have been together since 1969! However, they got married on June 27, 1975.
Speaking of John’s sibling, Autumn Carie was born in January 1980. She graduated from East Tennessee State University and married Joshua Carie in April 2023.
Unfortunately, John Boy’s grandparents were no longer in this world. His grandfather, John R. Caddell Sr., breathed his last on August 13, 2012, at the age of 83, while his grandmother, Claudia Melhorn Caddell, died on June 24, 2014, at the age of 80.
