Career
He has been included in the AFL by Essendon since the 1990 AFL Draft; however, due to a serious hip injury and other illnesses during his youth football career, he was not selected until pick number 79, Essendon’s eighth and one of the final picks in draft. Hird missed most of his first season with the club in 1991 through injury. At the end of the season, a vote was taken to determine if he should be dropped from the roster. The majority (4-2) decided to drop Hird, but coach Kevin Sheedy, who saw a bright future for the young Hird, decided to keep him. Hird ended up staying at the club.
