How to update software on a Samsung smart TV

Samsung is one of the world’s leading TV brands. Not only do LED, QLED, and QD-OLEDs deliver incredibly strong picture quality, they’re also some of the best TVs for streaming movies and TV shows from your favorite apps, including Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. We bet you’ve heard the term “smart TV,” and being able to connect to Wi-Fi to enjoy apps, games, and web browsing on your TV is exactly what “smart” means in a smart TV. But like any good internet-connected device, today’s best Samsung smart TVs require software updates to ensure the best possible smart experience.

Make sure your Samsung TV is running the latest software (sometimes called firmware) to ensure the best performance across the board, including things like app optimization, overall security, bug fixes and, in some cases, picture enhancements and sound. We also have articles on how to keep your apps up to date and how to delete apps from your Samsung Smart TV.

By accepting the Smart Hub terms and conditions during the initial setup of your Samsung TV, you give Samsung permission to apply automatic software updates to your device. If you haven’t agreed to these terms beforehand or want to learn more about other ways to get software updates for your Samsung TV, we’ve described several methods for doing so in this guide.

Update your Samsung TV software online

Aside from having automatic updates set up, this is by far the easiest way to download and install updates for your Samsung Smart TV.

Step 1: First things first: make sure your TV is connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network. If you’ve been “borrowing” internet from the restaurant across the street, it’s not time to bet on your connection. If your TV is not connected to a hard network while downloading or deploying a software update, it could potentially take a long time for the new patch to download at all. In some cases, this can even cause the TV software to freeze completely — and that’s usually not a fate you can escape.

Step 2: Once your TV is connected to Wi-Fi, press Menu or settings button on the remote control, go to settingsthen select support.

Step 3: Then select Software updatethen Update now. You will also see an on/off switch Automatic update. Don’t worry, we’ll get to that in a few moments.

Step 4: If an update is available, the TV will ask you to confirm the download. After you give permission, the TV will start downloading the patch and install it. From start to finish, this process only takes a few minutes.

We cannot stress this enough: During any part of the update process, do not turn off the TV. In this way, you expose your TV to the risk of failure during the implementation of new software.

Step 5: When the update finishes installing, your TV will restart automatically. That’s all.

Update your Samsung TV software using a USB flash drive

If you don’t have a Wi-Fi network ready for your TV to jump to, another way to download and install software updates is with a USB flash drive.

Step 1: All the latest software updates for the complete line of Samsung TVs can be found online through the Samsung Download Center.

Step 2: Once you are on the page, you can search for your specific TV by selecting it Product typethen TV. If you already know the exact model number of your TV, you can click Enter the model number to enter the mixture of letters and numbers that make up the name of your Samsung.

Step 4: The update will be added to your computer as a compressed file. Find the file, then unzip it. To make the next step easier, we recommend moving the unzipped file to your desktop.

Step 5: Next, go ahead and connect your USB flash drive to one of your computer’s USB ports. Then click and drag the unzipped update file to your USB or copy/paste it from your computer to the drive.

You need to make sure that the update file is stored directly on the drive and not in the auxiliary folders that you already have on the USB. If the update file is placed in a secondary folder, your TV will not be able to find it (our next step).

Step 6: Dismount the USB drive, disconnect it from the computer, and then connect it to one of the USB ports on your Samsung TV.

Step 7: Take the TV remote control and turn on the device. Open it Main menuchoose settingsthen support. Then choose Software update > Update now > That.

Your TV will then ask for the update downloaded from the USB. After detection, the set will start installing updates. To repeat: do not turn off the TV during this process. When the update is complete, your TV will restart automatically.

Setting up your Samsung TV for automatic software updates

If you’d rather not have to manually check for updates from time to time, you can turn this feature on so that updates are downloaded while your TV is in standby mode (turned off but still connected to power). After you turn your TV back on, the update is automatically applied to your device.

Updating apps on your Samsung TV

In addition to the major software updates your Samsung TV receives, there are also individual app updates to consider. Regularly updating TV apps ensures that you get the best experience with your smart TV as a whole. App updates can be relatively minor (bug fixes) to major (menu redesign). Regardless of the size of the download, app updates can be just as important as software patches that hit your TV directly.

Step 1: On the Samsung TV remote control, press Smart Hub or Home button.

Step 2: Choose applications from the bottom ribbon of the menu options. Then choose My appsafter which follows Possibilities.

Step 3: If you want your TV apps to update automatically, switch Automatic update on.

In the future, if you notice that there is a delay when you press Smart home or Home on your TV remote, this is because your TV is implementing any app updates that were last installed. You’ll also see some sort of message telling you that updates are being applied. After a minute or two this message will disappear and you will be able to use your TV as usual.

Step 4: With Automatic update disabled, you can manually choose which TV apps receive updates. To do this, press Smart Hub or Home button, select My appsthen select the update box (located nearby Possibilities). Select the box to update.

From here, you’ll see a list of apps installed on your TV that have updates available, allowing you to choose which ones will receive the latest software/firmware.
