How to catch Ditto in Pokémon Go

There is no specific way to catch Ditto Pokémon Go; it is a process of trial and error. Still, if you follow our tips, you should have a Ditto in your Pokédex in no time.

Ask the community

The best way to catch Ditto Pokémon Go is to ask the fan base in your area where they found it. The game has a huge international community, even in 2021. No matter where you are, you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a Discord or Facebook group dedicated to your area (this is handy Pokémon Go a community map should help).

Since Dittos appear as regular Pokémon, you should be able to find them in areas where others do. Of course, Pokémon change all the time, but if you’re on the hunt and post the bug in your local Discord group, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding Ditto.

Look for Ditto candidates

Ditto will only appear like the 15 Pokémon above, so if you’re trying to find one, there’s no point in wasting your time on other Pokémon. If you’re looking for Ditto, it’s best to set up shop in an area with a lot of Ditto masks. That way you can grind Weedle and Bidoofs all day until Ditto spawns.

Grind with baits and incense

If you’ve been let down by the community and haven’t caught Ditto naturally, it’s time to resort to items. Setting up shop at a PokéStop is the best option. This way, you can drop bait and incense to attract Pokémon to your location for half an hour or more, depending on how many PokéCoins you have available.

Although this is a brute force solution, it is effective. If you can find a few other people hunting Dittos in your area, you can assemble your items for hours of pointless grinding. While there is no guaranteed Ditto drop rate, it shouldn’t be too hard to find, especially if you spend some special items.

Substitute for Ditto

This is our final tip for catching Ditto Pokémon Go, and with good reason. While you can technically trade in for Ditto, it won’t count towards any missions that ask you to “capture” Ditto. To complete such a quest, you’ll need to actually capture the Ditto, not just have it appear in your inventory.

However, if you just want to fill up your Pokédex or show off to your friends, you can always trade for a Ditto, which you can learn in our guide. However, you will need a lot of stardust to exchange, which you can get by conquering gyms, catching new Pokémon, and evolving your Pokémon.

Using Ditto in Pokémon Go

The primary purpose of hunting Ditto is to complete a special research task or fill your Pokédex. Still, there is an added benefit to keeping Ditto on the roster, especially when it comes to gymnasiums. When you use Ditto in a gym battle, it will automatically replicate the first Pokémon you meet, mimicking its moveset.

While it’s helpful for getting some powerful moves quickly, your Ditto will retain its starting CP, so it’s smart to stock up on various potions before you head into combat. You won’t be able to develop your Ditto either, just like the base game. This is why you can upgrade your Ditto by using candies and Stardust.
