In June 2023, several news outlets reported that Hollywood queen Con Hargobind Tahilramani had lost her extradition battle after being ruled a “con artist” by a judge. Indonesian man Hargobind Tahilramani, 43, is wanted in the US for a £1.5m fraud in which he pretended to be a prominent film director, including the producers of Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker of The Dark Knight. He faces two counts of internet fraud, five counts of aggravated identity theft and one count of conspiracy to commit internet fraud.
According to reports, the victims received invitations that gave them the chance of a lifetime to work on a big-budget film in Indonesia between January 1, 2013, and August 31, 2020. They are believed to be Sherry Lansing, former head of Paramount, Amy Pascal, former head of Sony Pictures , and Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy were among those defrauded by the Indonesian “catfish”.
To lure creatives into his scam, Hargobind allegedly impersonated Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch’s ex-wife, speaking in a high-pitched voice. After an extensive year-long investigation by the FBI, he was arrested early on 26 November 2020 at an aparthotel in Manchester charging £60 per night. Tahilramani insisted that his case be prosecuted in the UK rather than being extradited to the US. .
He said extradition would put him at risk of deportation to Indonesia and that prison conditions in the US would expose him to cruel treatment. In addition, he argued that his mental state made it unlikely that he would be held in solitary confinement. Joel Smith of US authorities previously told the court that Hargobind promised his victims jobs they would never get.
The US charges a total of eight counts against the defendants – two counts of wire fraud, five counts of aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. If found guilty, the accused could spend years in prison. The Hollywood Con Queen said he was leading a fake life for being gay during his extradition last year. He also said that US prosecutors planned to harm him.
In 2023, Hargobind’s extradition was accepted by Chief Justice Paul Goldspring, who referred the case to Home Secretary Suella Braverman for a decision.
The court heard that Tahilramani, also known as Amy Pascal, contacted freelance photographer Will Strathman via email and convinced him to go to Indonesia to oversee a travel series for Netflix. He is said to have paid around £40,000 in fictitious expenses for three trips in 2017. Dan Considine of Los Angeles received a text message in May 2020 purportedly from producer Thomas Hayslip, who works with director Christopher Nolan on Inception and Tenet.
According to testimony given in court, Mr Considine communicated with Tahilramani, who played “Dana Walden”, another producer who convinced Mr Considine to send audition films and spend almost $7,000 (£5,600) on martial arts training videos in an attempt to get a role in Nolan’s film.
Hargobind also posed as Gavin Ambani, a wannabe food influencer.
In addition, he attended college in America where, under the nickname “Harvey”, he participated in competitive debate with a focus on “persuasive speaking” until he was accused of stealing another competitor’s argument. He was jailed for making a bomb threat to the American embassy in Indonesia; after being kicked off the college debate team for plagiarism, he made phone calls disguised as a furious Cate Blanchett.
Hargobind had a reputation as a dangerous food blogger, so Yotam Ottolenghi banned him from all his restaurants.

Hargobind told the court that he grew up in an Indonesian community of Sindhi Indians who upheld “strict values”. The community expected it to be a girl when his mother became pregnant.
