Magnolia Network’s Gray Benko is happy to be home with the Banks
Happy to be Home with the Banks of the Magnolia Network featured Gray Benko along with her husband and father as they breathe new life into the historic homes of Summerville, South Carolina.
“This new series features designer Gray Benk, who brings color and happiness to historic homes in the South Carolina lowlands,” the official description reads. “Her thoughtful handyman husband of hers, Mike, and eccentric contractor dad, Grumpy, join her in bringing her whimsical visions to life.”
The theme of the show was like any other design show. Gray drove to the new client’s house and outlined what he wanted from his project, and then his mother oversaw the entire renovation. But it is not as simple as it seems. “With these old houses, you’re looking at 200 years of layers,” Gray’s husband, Mike, said. “Rehabbing a historic home has its problems.” However, Gray concluded, they happily accepted these challenges because “it means a lot to us to be able to bring that happiness to the homes where we work.”
Unfortunately, the series ended up in six episodes, each one hour long. And we don’t know if season 2 is on the way or not.

Gray asks everyone who wants to get into interior design to be patient because “the job will never be done.” He asks others to see themselves as “managers of these houses because they have such a long history and will live much further away than we do.”
Mike and Gray Bank’s relationship
Gray married her husband, Mike Benko, on June 1, 2008. This means they have been together for over 14 years and are still going strong as of 2023. However, the road to 14 wasn’t easy.
“I am not going to lie and pretend that it has always been salsa. We spent many difficult years together, somewhere I wasn’t sure we would last. But we stuck together and we persevered and I think our bond is much stronger today, not despite, but because of all that struggle and tears and determination,” Gray explained.
As for their children, the lovebirds have a son named Charlie and a daughter named Farris. They were born on August 25, 2012 and September 27, 2009, and in 2023 they were in 4th and 7th grade, respectively.
Fun fact: Mike often has his hand on Gray’s belly as if she is pregnant in the footage.

His parents, Joe and Mary Highsmith, work at Highsmith Construction. However, while Gray’s father is involved in construction or design, her mother handles most of Highsmith Construction’s accounting functions. You could say that she does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps Highsmith Construction running like a well-oiled machine.
Their company, Highsmith Construction, has been building custom homes since 1952. They pride themselves on creating brand new custom homes, remodeling existing residences, building commercial space, and building tenants.
Joe and Mary turned 72 and 75 in 2023.
As for Gray’s 3-year-old younger sister, Catherine Highsmith Deutsch was a director of human resources at Ally Financial. In 2023, she resided in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband, Stephen Deutsch, and her daughter.
