Golden Retriever Assuming Newborn’s Nursery is for Him Delights Internet

Some people believe that dogs and babies don’t mix, but others disagree. One of the parents-to-be who includes his pet in the preparations for the baby is the owner of the golden retriever Kobe.

In a video posted to @airbudkobe, which has been viewed more than 100,000 times, Kobe can be seen relaxing in a recliner in a new nursery. The room is complete with a plaque reading “little sister 07.20.23” and a framed photo of Kobe. When the dog thinks you made the whole baby room just for him, he says the text.

“We’ve been working on the daycare since March of this year,” said Danielle Vanos, Kobe’s owner. news week“Kobe ‘helped’ us paint the accent wall and make the furniture. Our deadline is July 20, so only two more weeks, so exciting!”

It sounds like Kobe will adjust quickly to a new baby, but there’s plenty of advice for insecure dog owners and parents-to-be. As she begins to prepare for the baby, her dog will notice the changes that occur in the house and in her world. “As your pregnancy progresses, everything about you begins to change, from your gait to your hormones and your routine. New furniture appears. Rooms are rearranged. Your anxiety level increases,” reports the American Kennel Club (AKC) on its website.

Dogs are very intuitive and pick up on body language and pheromones. “If you’re anxious and worried about your dog’s reaction to the baby, you may be inadvertently feeding that anxiety,” says the AKC. “Try to find a happy medium between alertness and stress. Practice feeling it. Practice breathing normally and not holding your breath when the two of you are in the room together.”

“We hired a personal trainer to give us some tips on how to prepare Kobe for the baby,” Vanos explained. “We’ve been working on his ‘place and stay’ command and even had some babies come in for practice last week and it’s been great! Kobe has spent a lot of time at daycare while I’ve been gathering and organizing clothes, building furniture and decorating.

“He likes to steal baby clothes when I’m not looking. Kobe has a goofy personality and likes to steal anything he can get his hands on. He makes life interesting! We can’t wait for his little sister to grow up to be an accomplice.”

Once the baby is born, take baby steps to get to know your dog. Plan for supervised interactions and “try to take small successes and build on them. Talk to your vet about ways you can help your dog overcome anxiety,” recommends the AKC.

A crate for your dog is also a useful tool to get your pet used to the new arrival. “Your dog’s crate should be his sanctuary, a space that is his alone (and ideally out of the reach of children),” says the AKC. “If you have nannies, nannies, or visiting relatives caring for the dogs as part of the household help, you can’t trust them to be as vigilant as you would be. In these cases, a padlock on the cage with a note: ‘Don’t let them out!’ – reminds them in your absence.”
