Drunk driver killed boy, 13, then tried blocking medics from saving his life – as video shows teen speeding before crash

A DRUNK driver killed a 13-year-old boy – then tried to prevent medics from saving his life.

Shocking footage shows 19-year-old Harley Whiteman high on cocaine speeding before the fatal crash in Hirwuan, south Wales.

He swerved his car and mounted the curb at high speed before hitting schoolboy Kaylan Hippsley.

The thug then drove off, returning to the scene only after dropping off two passengers.

Shameless Whiteman pretended to be a bystander – telling the student nurse performing CPR on Kaylan to “just leave him.”

He said, “Do you think I care about this kid on the floor? Why the hell don’t you just leave him and be done with it?”

Whiteman became aggressive after passersby told him to move over – denying he had a car.

As the nurse struggled to save Kaylan, Whiteman threatened to fight the other man.

Tragic Kaylan was described as a “cheeky boy” who “always had a twinkle in his eye”.

On February 29, the young man was walking home with friends when he was hit by Whiteman’s Ford Fiesta.

He was taken to the hospital, but died of his injuries four days after the accident.

Chilling footage released by cops shows Whiteman’s Ford Fiesta speeding down a quiet street just moments before the hit-and-run.

When officers arrested Whiteman, he told them, “It was a very good show.”

The 19-year-old refused breath and blood tests – before speaking, he drank four pints and snorted cocaine.

Whiteman was in two pubs and kicked out of one for being drunk, Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard.

Whiteman is now in prison after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a sample.

But Kaylan’s devastated family condemned his sentence of six years and nine months as an “insult” to the boy’s memory.

They said: “The sentence given to Whiteman will never be long enough.

“But the sentence handed down today for six years and nine months is absolutely disgusting.

Family tribute to a ‘bright, intelligent boy’

Kaylan’s family said in a statement:

“Kaylan was such a cheeky guy. He always had a twinkle in his eye and could get away with all his smiles and swagger.

“He was so handsome like his father. Kaylan was a talented rugby and soccer player. He loved online games.

“He was a bright, intelligent boy and a well-loved pupil at Aberdare Community School.

“He loved spending time with his family and had a great group of friends.

“We are devastated to lose Kaylan at such a young age, just 13 years old with his whole life ahead of him.

“We as a family would like to thank everyone who helped at the scene, from the EMS, members of the public, Kaylan’s friends to the EMS and the police.

“They did everything they could to save Kaylan. We are grateful to them from the bottom of our hearts.

“We also thank the local community of Hirwaun who supported us from afar by sending us their prayers and support. We are very grateful.

“We want to give a special thanks to the nurses and doctors in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Heath Hospital for their care of Kaylan and their support to our family at such a terrible time.

“They were so caring and respectful – we will be forever grateful for their support.

“Kaylan, your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are indescribably loved and immeasurably missed.

“Until we meet again.”

“Whiteman will only have to serve three years and four months. It’s an insult to Kaylan’s memory.

“This will be a small chapter in Whiteman’s life where Kaylan was only 13 years old and never got to live the life he deserved.

“The judicial system has failed us. This completely changed our lives.

“When Mr. Whiteman got into that car along with two other men, they knew what they were doing.”

The family added: “They should all take some responsibility for what happened to Kaylan.

“Although the other two were not charged, they were with the defendant.

This sentence is an insult to Kaylan’s memory

Family statement

“Everyone drank and took drugs that day, we can never forgive them for that either.

“Not only did Mr Whiteman hit Kaylan while driving dangerously, he also drove away from the scene.

“He only came back under the pretext of finding out what happened.

“He callously attempted to interfere with medics treating Kaylan at the scene and resisted arrest.”

The family added: “Mr Whiteman has shown no remorse for what he has done.”

‘RESPONSIBLE’

James Hartson, defending, said Whiteman was unable to provide an explanation for his actions.

He told the court that Whiteman was “shocked, disoriented and panicked”.

Judge Jeremy Jenkins told Whiteman his actions were “heinous and callous”.

He said: “When you were arrested you were aggressive, unruly and incorrigible.”

In addition to his sentence in a young offenders institute, Whiteman was disqualified from driving for a period of eight years and four months.
