A video of an SUV driving through the crowded streets of Bhopal using autonomous driving technology is being widely shared online, impressing social media users.

A Bhopal-based startup, Swaayatt Robots, conducted a demonstration last month using a Mahindra Bolero, modifying it into a driverless SUV.

At 6:38 you can see a vehicle maneuvering pedestrians, vehicles coming from the opposite direction, a dog and even a cow.

The demo was made on a very narrow, unpredictable road that is primarily suited to one-way traffic, carts lined up on the side of the narrow road, and cyclists.

“This kind of traffic and environment has never been seen in the history of autonomous driving,” Swaayatt Robots wrote on their YouTube channel.

“Autonomous driving through extremely tight-dynamic environments with complex, stochastic and adversarial traffic dynamics, or simply through absolute chaos, on suburban unstructured roads in India,” the company said.

The video impressed Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra who praised the startup for the effort, calling it “proof of technological innovation”.

“Evidence of growing tech innovation across India. An engineer not building another delivery app. @sanjeevs_iitr uses complex math to target level 5 autonomy. Cheering loudly. And certainly won’t debate his choice of car,” Mahindra wrote on X (ex Twitter) earlier this month, tagging Sanjeev Sharma, founder and CEO of Swaayatt Robots.

Sharma, an IIT Roorkee graduate, said the video that went viral was the startup’s 83rd demonstration on roads in India.

“…our August 2024 demo will change the way autonomous driving is perceived globally,” he said in a post on X.

The company has released several other videos of its vehicle trying to drive autonomously in different conditions such as dense fog, crossing toll plazas, night autonomous driving and high-speed off-road driving.

Swaayatt Robots has raised $3 million in seed funding from US investors in 2021.
