Ding Liren’s wife: Is the world chess champion married?
Chinese chess grandmaster Ding Lire is probably not married, but nothing can be said for sure because he chooses to keep his private life a secret. We know for sure that he wasn’t married until at least 2017. But it’s been five years since his interview with Chess Base, which was conducted by Sagar Shah.
In his recent match in 2023, in which he defeated Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi, he was not seen with a wedding ring on his finger. But in Asian culture, men don’t necessarily wear wedding rings, and women started wearing them not long ago in Christian-influenced countries.
So, it is not clear if he is married and if he has a wife.
Ding Liren’s girlfriend: Is the Chinese grandmaster dating anyone?
Ding Liren had a girlfriend or at least mentioned that he had a girlfriend in 2017. When the interviewer of International Master Sagar Shah of Chess Base When asked if he has a girlfriend, Ding Liren replied, “Yes. She is a chess player, but not that strong. Sometimes we practice chess in Beijing. I don’t want to reveal her name.”
So we can say that he had a girlfriend who shares his passion for chess.
Many of his fans assumed that fellow chess player Hou Yifan was his girlfriend. But Ding said that his girlfriend is not a good chess player and Hou is a phenomenal player, so she is not Ding’s girlfriend.
During a 2020 interview with Chess.com, he also discussed relationships and marriage. He talked about his simple life in his hometown and his independent life after leaving his parents’ house.
Ding talked about his girlfriend’s situation, saying, “I think it might happen when I’m in a stable relationship with a woman. I have absolutely no desire to live alone. Sometimes I go and spend time with my grandparents. They are very close, close, and sometimes when my parents are working, I go to see them. But in China, the culture is that you (usually) get your own apartment only when you get married or engaged, so especially when you have a steady girlfriend.”
During that interview, Ding mentioned that her last relationship at the time ended at the end of 2019. She blamed her travels as the reason for their breakup.
Regarding the problems in maintaining a relationship, Ding said, “Yes, I have to agree. In almost every relationship, being so far away for most of the year is a problem. He waited five years for a rematch, in 2016 in a friendly match in which the Chinese grandmaster defeated So 2.5:1.5.
In terms of education, Ding attended Peking University where he studied law. The Chinese player said in an interview: “I studied in the 10th grade until 2009. Only then did I decide to become a professional chess player. My parents think it’s much better to learn something other than chess. I had the opportunity to go to Peking University, which is one of the best in China, without taking the entrance exam. I got access based on my chess successes. It is a good opportunity to open your eyes to the world, to learn something new. “
But instead of a career as a lawyer, he would rather choose a career in chess.
