Croydon stabbing: Girl, 15, dies after being knifed on bus as cops arrest teen ‘known to her’ following horror incident

A SCHOOLGIRL died today after being stabbed on a bus as officers arrested a teenager “she knew”.

Doctors battled to save the 15-year-old after she was stabbed on the 60 bus on Wellesley Road in Croydon, south London, but she died less than an hour later.

The driver of the bus, which was heading towards Streatham station, allegedly asked passengers to look for weapons.

Officers, the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance were called at around 8.30am.

The teenager sadly died at 9.21am and the crime scene is in place with a white tent erected inside a police cordon.

A boy known to the victim has been arrested, the Metropolitan Police said.

Passengers on the bus described how they were horrified after the attack took place.

One witness, who did not want to be named, told The Sun: “Someone attacked a young girl.

“The victim was a student, she must have only been of high school age. She wore a green school uniform.

“When that happened, everyone ran off the bus.”

Another person on Facebook said: “There has been a Croydon stabbing. Stay away. The bus driver just asked us to look for a knife on the bus as it was the closest to the bus.

“Please be careful if you are in the area. When will this end?”

Police were questioning guests who had breakfast at the Leonardo Hotel across Wellesley Road.

Hotel staff gathered towels and garbage bags before rushing to the scene in a heroic attempt to save the young girl.

Beldine Kutima, a receptionist at the four-star hotel, told The Sun: “One of our duty managers went to get the bus but came back in complete shock and crying a lot.

“She ran back screaming and grabbed towels from the back room and ran back.”

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, in charge of local policing, said: “Our immediate thoughts are with the family of this young girl who are dealing with the most tragic news. Our officers are with the girl’s family to offer their support.

“I am in contact with the local community, who are obviously as concerned as we are about this tragic incident. I will continue to update them throughout the day.

“My officers immediately arrived on the scene to provide first aid and support the paramedics.

“Acting on information brought to them, officers also worked closely with colleagues from across the Met and British Transport Police to trace the teenager in connection with the stabbing.

“I can confirm that the arrest was made at around 09:45 in the Croydon area. At this early stage we believe he may have known her.

“The crime scene will be set up for some time and I am grateful for the cooperation of the locals.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I am absolutely devastated by the death of a 15-year-old girl in Croydon this morning.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this young girl, and the entire community, at this unimaginably awful time.

“I promise to keep working day and night to end the scourge of knives in our city.”

Croydon Mayor Jason Perry said in a statement on social media: “I am devastated to hear that a teenage girl who was stabbed in the town center this morning has tragically passed away.

“The council is in contact with the police and will fully support their investigation. The thoughts of our entire community will be with the family and friends of the victim.”

Sarah Jones, MP for Croydon Central, tweeted: “Heartbroken that a child has been killed on his way to school.

“I can’t imagine what her family and friends are going through at this terrible time.”

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8.33am today (September 27) to reports of an incident in Wellesley Road, Croydon.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including three ambulance crews, an incident response officer and an advanced car paramedic. We also sent the London Air Ambulance.

“We treated the teenage girl, but unfortunately, despite our best efforts, she died at the scene.”

Police set up forensic screens and a tent a few meters from the bus after two ambulances left around 10am.

Wellesley Road is closed northbound from the Whitgift Center to St Michael’s Road.

Transport for London has diverted its 60, 407 and 455 routes following the harrowing incident.
