“Another day, another financial fraud scheme,” Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Aditi Chopra wrote on Xu while sharing details of a scam she might have fallen for.

Chopra said she was on an office call when an individual called her and said he had to send money to her father, but since there was a problem with his bank account, he asked him to send it to her. Then he said her ten-digit cell phone number out loud. The coinage trap followed.

“[After he] I said my number out loud and immediately saw this SMS pop up in exactly the same format as any bank loan SMS would look like,” she added.

“First I received an SMS mentioning a loan of ₹10,000, then a loan of ₹30,000, all while he was talking,” Chopra further wrote.

The scammer then says that he was only supposed to send her 3000 INR but accidentally sent 30000 INR. He then asks her to return the remaining amount, claiming that he is at the clinic where he needs to pay the doctor.

Chopra called the urgency created by the scammer “real game.”

She also revealed that when she carefully looked at the text messages she received, she was sure it was a scam. “They [the SMSes] are with a 10-digit phone number, not a company ID. Sure enough, when I called a minute after checking the account, I was blocked.”

She also advised people to “always check their actual bank account on a separate device and never send text messages”.

In addition, she attached a screenshot of the text messages she received on her phone and marked cyber cell in her post.

As expected, many flooded the comments section of the post with similar invitations they had received. User X said: “Dad fell for a similar scam. He actually sent the money. The messages had company tags, not regular phone numbers, but then the guy is a skilled con artist and had three more scams on the same day. Stay safe!”

“Today I got a call from customs in Lucknow. Jamtara in real life,” added another.

The third said: “Good. It is important to remain vigilant.”
