Baby Reindeer ‘stalker’ Fiona Harvey made three claims to me that rang alarm bells – despite saying the show is all lies

I’ve interviewed a lot of very dangerous people in my career, from serial killers to medically diagnosed psychopaths.

And the common denominator is that they are always very skilled liars, often because their twisted minds have made them believe what they say even if the facts say otherwise.

Fiona Harvey didn’t kill anyone.

But if she was doing all the things she was portrayed as in Baby Reindeer, then she must be a very unstable, obsessive and threatening stalker who made Richard Gadd’s life hell.

And indeed, the lives of the other people she was accused of harassing as well. But IS it all true?

Netflix boasts at the beginning of the series that it is a ‘true story’, without ambiguity.

And to leave the streamer’s position in no doubt, Benjamin King, Netflix’s senior UK director of public policy, told a parliamentary committee this week: ‘Baby Reindeer is an extraordinary story and it is clearly a true story of horrific abuse. that the writer and protagonist, Richard Gadd, suffered at the hands of a convicted stalker.’

Maybe she’s lying

However, Fiona says she was never convicted of stalking Gadd, let alone confessed to it in court in shame, as the show says.

And no journalist has yet found evidence that she was ever charged or convicted of any crime.

Maybe she’s lying.

But that’s not hard to verify, and if it turns out that Fiona Harvey was never convicted of stalking Gadd or anyone else, then surely that puts a huge hole in Baby Reindeer’s credibility?

And that would seriously call into question how much Gadd’s version of events can be trusted.

With a secret scandal, a history of dodgy relationships and already a million in the bank – does the Baby Reindeer star deserve praise or is he a cynical egotist?

Netflix also claims it has done everything it can to avoid identifying the real people behind the characters in the show.

But the actress they chose to play Martha is incredibly similar to Fiona Harvey physically and in the way she spoke on the show.

And as a result of all the clues they provided, including specific phrases used in tweets and messages purportedly from Martha to Gadd, Internet detectives identified her in about ten nanoseconds.

This very quickly led to people bombarding Fiona Harvey with abuse and death threats.

There were moments in the interview where my suspicious alarm bells rang loudly, especially when she suddenly said, ‘Even if the email thing is true, the rest isn’t.’

All of this points to a spectacular breach of duty of care by Netflix, Gadd and Clerkenwell Films who produced the series, which I think carries with it serious legal risk.

Of course, none of this means that Fiona Harvey told me the truth. I find her to be intelligent, quick-thinking and combative.

And on a human level, I felt sorry for her that she was publicly dragged through the grind like this.

Her general behavior, on and off camera, with me and my team gave none of us cause for concern about either her potential danger or her mental state, although it must be said that stalkers can be very convincing in their ability to hide their true personality or obsessive intentions.

The ’email thing’ is the 41,000 emails she sent to Gadd.

And if this is true, then it would mean that she was very obsessively seeking contact with him.

I also found it very strange that she admitted to having up to 6 email addresses and 4 cell phones that she ‘used for different people.’

That’s not normal.

General denials

She also made a series of unequivocal denials about how long she had known Gadd and how much contact she had with him, which were proven to be false.

The claim that she sent him only one letter, while he says there are 105, seems particularly disingenuous.

All in all, I would say that Fiona Harvey lied to me a lot in the interview and if her threat of legal action against Netflix and Gadd goes ahead, I imagine it will quickly be revealed that she sent him all the emails, texts and letters.

But that doesn’t mean she can’t be a victim here too.

Gadd was, by his own admission, a very damaged guy who took a lot of drugs, enthusiastically led a chaotic creepy sex life, and led Martha on in a way that may have fueled her obsession. He was also accused of soliciting trans actresses that he was lining up for work.

Honestly, everything is a mess.

But if Richard Gadd feels he has the right to make millions by telling his side of the story, and in the process make very serious allegations about Fiona Harvey, then surely she has the right to respond and defend herself?

As for who is exploiting whom, I will leave that to the court of public opinion.
