Wendy is also the granddaughter of Mrs. Arthur B. Griffin Jr. of Stuart, Fla., and the late Richard Weil Jr., who was president of Macy’s New York.
The submarine pilot’s wife is also descended from the famous Titanic couple. Wendy is the great-great-granddaughter of merchant magnate Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida, two of the richest people who died on an ocean liner. Isidor and Ida Straus, first class passengers who died on the Titanic, are seen in a portrait taken around 1910.
Mrs. Rush is the great-great-granddaughter of merchant magnate Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida, two of the richest people on the Titanic on its maiden voyage. Mr. Straus, born in 1845, was part owner of Macy’s department store. Mrs. Rush, born Wendy Hollings Weil, married Stockton Rush in 1986, according to a wedding announcement in the New York Times.
Mrs. Rush’s ancestors on the Titanic are perhaps best known for their tragic love story. Those who survived the disaster recalled seeing Isidore Strauss refusing to sit in a lifeboat while women and children were still waiting to escape the sinking ship. Ida Straus, his wife of four decades, declared that she would not leave her husband, and the two were seen standing hand in hand on the deck of the Titanic as the ship sank.
A fictionalized version of the Strauss’ story was immortalized in pop culture by director James Cameron, whose 1997 disaster film features poignant footage of an elderly couple hugging in bed as water rises around their cabin. Mrs. Rush is descended from one of the Strauss’ daughters, Minnie, who married Dr. Richard Weil in 1905. Their son, Richard Weil Jr., later became president of Macy’s New York, and his son, Dr. Richard Weil III, is the father of Mrs. Rush, according to Joan Adler, executive director of the Straus Historical Society.
Isidor Straus’ body was found at sea about two weeks after the Titanic sank, New York Times archives show. The remains of Ida Straus have never been found.
