At a time when many shows are struggling to make it to a second season, the Canadian mockumentary sitcom Trailer Park Boys has been quietly churning out one season after another for over two decades. The long-running series, which premiered in 2001, chronicles the misadventures of the residents of a fictional trailer park in Nova Scotia and their colorful cast of neighbors, allies, enemies, celebrity guests and law enforcement.
Now spanning 13 seasons, three movies, an animated series, an international touring play, and countless other spin-offs, Trailer Park Boys has a special Canadian Thanksgiving celebration coming up. Great Canadian Holiday Turkey Donair Day begins on October 10 and will be presented Trailer Park Boys follows Ricky, Bubbles, and Julian (better known as actors Robb Wells, Mike Smith, and John Paul Tremblay) as they prepare a “donair turkey” while hosting a nine-hour marathon of episodes of the show.
WITH Great Canadian Holiday Turkey Donair Day on the calendar and several seasons Trailer Park Boys available now and coming to various platforms in the near future, the guys at Sunnyvale Trailer Park are busy. Despite this, the trio found time to chat with Digital Trends (as their on-screen personas) about the upcoming Trailer Park Boys special, Canadian Thanksgiving, their live performances and new seasons on the streaming platform SwearNet, and how they ended up on a trip to space.

Digital Trends: You guys have been doing this show for over 20 years. Why do you think people love him so much?
Ricky: I have no idea. It’s kind of weird.
Bubbles: Well, I think it’s just because they see us on TV and say, I wish I could be like those guys because it hurts.
Julian: Yes, basically. Besides, Ricky does a lot of stupid things, and it’s good to laugh at stupid things.
Bubbles: Well that is fun.
Ricky: And we don’t need much to be happy. I think people learn a lot from it.
You’ve got big plans for Thanksgiving, but for all you Americans out there, how is Canadian Thanksgiving different from the American version?
Ricky: It’s only three days instead of four. What the hell.
Bubbles: You always party for at least seven days anyway, Ricky.
Ricky: Well, true. We don’t have big store sales like we do in the States, which is also bullshit.
Bubbles: It’s not about that, Ricky.
Julian: What are you even buying? Usually you just steal shit.
Bubbles: But he likes to steal things that are on sale!
Fair enough. We’ll be able to watch you make a donair turkey on Thanksgiving. How does a donair turkey differ from a standard turkey?
Bubbles: Oh, there is absolutely nothing alike between a donair turkey and a real turkey.
Ricky: Basically we have to make a donair meat and then we shape it into a turkey shape. Well, I guess it’s not a turkey. But it looks like one.
Bubbles: A real turkey is an animal that runs around. The turkey donair never ran around.
Julian: It comes from a cow, Bubbles.
Bubbles: I know! But it never ran around in turkey form!
Julian: It’s still a cow, Bubs.
Ricky: It would be great if there was such an animal.
Bubbles: Turkey donair? Are you going to hunt him? That would be great. Your [could] just grab it and just take a bite. Dip it in the sauce.

There will be a marathon of your SwearNet show on Thanksgiving while you prepare the turkey. Do you have favorite episodes that you can’t wait to see?
Bubbles: I wonder if they’ll show when you kidnapped Alex Lifeson from Rush.
Ricky: It wasn’t a kidnapping. It was borrowing.
Bubbles: Same thing, Ricky.
Julian: You don’t know lend people, rick.
Bubbles: And he went against his will!
Ricky: He was a good man in the end though. I thought he was a jerk, but he’s actually okay.
Bubbles: Oh, he’s a good friend of ours now. I hope they show it.
Julian: Oh, and Snoop Dogg – we’re getting into business with him. And that was good.
Ricky: I hope they don’t show any connections to Conky.
Bubbles: I hope they show Conky. I forgot about that. Those are from many years ago!
What will the rest of the park do while you make the turkey? What do you think Randy is up to?
Ricky: They better not come knocking here, I know that. Let’s hope they do their thing.
Julian: Randy will definitely show up. They will smell a donair turkey from the road. It will be here.
Bubbles: I don’t think so. He’s got a bunch of guys coming over and making a turkey and cheeseburger, I hear. I don’t think it will appear here. He’s got a lot of guys coming over for Thanksgiving.
Ricky: Were those the signs I saw for the Speedo party?
Bubbles: Yes! It’s Randy’s place!
Ricky: Would you like that, Julian?
Julian: No, Ricky, I won’t go for it.
It’s great to see the fan mail you get on the SwearNet show. Is there anything you wish fans would send more of – or maybe less of?
Julian: More drinks. More drugs.
Bubbles: Cash is good!
Julian: Cash is a great gift.
Ricky: There was some weird sex stuff. We could probably get less than that, maybe.
Julian: Less dildos and asses. We had a lot of those.
Ricky: Although everyone seems to have gotten used to it…

You played live for a while, traveled around the world. What was that experience like for you?
Bubbles: Oh, fantastic. We’ve been doing it for years all over the world, actually. We went to Australia doing that…
Julian: Scandinavian countries…
Bubbles: New Zealand … all over Europe …
Ricky: The response was actually crazy. I had no idea we had so many fans all over the world.
Bubbles: I think the biggest show we ever had was in Norway, right?
Julian: Two sold out nights, yes.
Bubbles: Two nights in a great big, giant theater!
What is different about doing live shows for you?
Ricky: Oh, it’s completely different. A lot also depends on the level of buzz we have. You never know what you’re going to get.
Bubbles: Yes, we’ve done shows where we don’t even remember being on stage.
Julian: [Sometimes] there are people who pass out drunk in the audience, and you have to wake them up and so on.
Bubbles: It happened in Ireland.
Bubbles, how has your music career progressed?
Bubbles: Fantastic. I have my own band, Bubbles and the Shitrockers, and we’re going to have a record coming out and stuff like that.
For anyone familiar with your show on Netflix, what is different about the SwearNet show?
Bubbles: It’s really fast with different clips. Basically, it’s for people who are really high.
Julian: Yeah, if you’re sitting around playing poker or something, it’s good to have something like that on TV. Like, background stuff, right?
Ricky: Yeah, they’re like five-minute chunks…
Julian: … And all together in puree, yes.
Bubbles: People’s brains don’t have enough attention spans these days, so you have to keep cutting clips short. In the end it will just be a single frame flashing. People will get used to that. But [the Swearnet show] are little short clips, just to get you into the groove, and then boom, it’s your turn for a new one.
We got to see you animated on SwearNet. How was that?
Bubbles: Yeah, the whole thing was kind of scary for me, you know, being on mushrooms…
Ricky: We did a lot of fun stuff though. We went to space and all kinds of crazy things.
Julian: It was mostly in our brains, Ricky, because we were so high. We didn’t really go into space.
Ricky: Well, it felt pretty real to me.
